The Lyndal and Graeme Lawless complaint
8th September 2023
Hi John,
Looking at the website the other day I came across two additions which I had not previously seen, and which I found surprising - one on the term of the President and the other on the role of the President.
Lyndal and I ask that the committee review these additions and satisfy itself that they are appropriate to remain on the website, particularly that:
- they are a complete and accurate account;
- they reflect the values of the Club, not least in regard to respectful treatment of members; and
- they represent views about the Club and its governance that we wish placed on a publicly available site.
The piece on the role of the President reflects what I presume is the personal view of the author. The focus on legal "power" rather than the chair's broader responsibilities around the general direction of the functions of the Club has produced a narrow and not particularly helpful view of the scope of the role of the chair. It is not clear why this is needed on the website.
Our principal concern, however, is with the piece on the term of the President.
Leaving aside the incomplete explanation of how the Club came to vote in favour of the three term limit for the President recommended by the Dept of Fair Trading, the naming of individuals and the selective recitation of views the author attributes to them is inappropriate. Naming members in this context in a section available to anybody to read is, in our view, just wrong.
Our request is that the two sections relating to the President be reviewed by the committee and either confirmed in their present form, amended or withdrawn.
As just individual members, our view is that the section on the term of the President should simply be deleted.
We have copied this email to Clare as Club Secretary.
Lyndal and Graeme Lawless
