Subject: Suggestion re changing social days

Date sent: Feb 15, 2025

Hi SBW committee,

In the good old days - i.e. before Mary's Presidency - every Wednesday from the beginning of February to the end of November was a scheduled bushwalking day. After it was introduced, the Big Day Out at the beginning of the year in the first week of February was still a bushwalking day - as different activities have always been scheduled for this day. Social activities and meetings were scheduled outside of these Wednesdays - usually at night so we could have slide shows, movies, talks etc.

The Wednesday Xmas Party never actually replaced a bushwalking day, as the Xmas Party was scheduled on the first Wednesday after the end of the walking program, usually the first week of December. The walking program then re-started at the beginning of February, with Leader Training Day being the Wednesday prior to the start of the walking program.

With Mary deciding that the club should be a social club as well as a bushwalking club, she got rid of two bushwalking days during the year and replaced them with social days where meetings are held.

Now that Mary has set that precedent, there is nothing in our badly-worded constitution or standing resolutions to stop the current or future committees from eroding the bushwalking component of the club even further and replacing more and more of our bushwalking days with social days.

[The relevant badly-worded part of the constitution - which allowed the social crap to creep into the club - states that the main objective of the club shall be "To provide recreational opportunities for members interested in bushwalking and other related activities" - when it should have said "to provide bushwalking and other related activities for members" so that the club remained a bushwalking club rather than a social club (and free child-minding service).]

I would like to suggest that the committee restore every Wednesday between February 1st and November 30th back to being a bushwalking day again - and to pass a standing resolution to that effect.

The "social / meeting days" could still take place - but on non-bushwalking days i.e. a Tuesday or a Thursday - and you could schedule as many of them as you like! 😀

Regards,
Brett

This page shows one of the 35 suggestions to improve the club and its procedures sent by the Shoalhaven Bushwalkers webmaster to the SBW committee in 2025. The Shoalhaven Bushwalkers webmaster would have his membership cancelled for sending in these suggestions, although the real reason was probably because of two disputes he raised with the Shoalhaven Bushwalkers committee which they seemingly did not want to deal with. The cancellation of the webmaster's membership was arguably illegal under NSW law and could lead to the club being taken to court.
