Hi SBW,
I had to change the "Acknowledgement of Country" on the BirdLife Shoalhaven website recently because Reconciliation Australia - the lead body for reconciliation in Australia - says "many view the “emerging leader” coda as an unwelcome addition." Indigenous Strategy, Education & Research at the UNSW says "The more recent practice of acknowledging “emerging leaders” or “Elders past, present, and emerging” is generally not accepted practice in the Indigenous community and should not be used." This can be viewed at https://www.indigenous.unsw.edu.au/strategy/culture-and-country/acknowledgement-country-and-welcome-country
Apparently "emerging elders" tends to refer to younger people, and many old elders believe that its use disparages age.
I thought I would just pass this on as the acknowledgement of country on the SBW website says "We pay our respects to their Elders - past, present and emerging" ...
Cheers,
Brett
